Liposuction costs consultation in Düsseldorf with Dr Kusenack

Liposuction costs: What you should know

Liposuction costs are a decisive factor for many patients when planning their procedure. Liposuction can be an effective method of getting rid of stubborn fat deposits that cannot be reduced despite exercise and diet. Below you will find a transparent overview of the liposuction costs in our practice, the most important influencing factors and information on possible cost coverage.

Cost of liposuction

The cost of liposuction depends on the amount of fatty tissue and the area of the body to be treated. In my practice, invoicing is transparent and in accordance with the scale of fees for doctors (GOÄ). The following liposuction costs will give you an initial guide:

  • Counselling interview: approx. 170,- € (incl. ultrasound of the leg veins). We are legally obliged to charge for the initial consultation.
  • Thigh (front and inner side incl. knee joint): approx. 4.800,- €
  • Riding breeches (outer thighs and back): approx. 4.800,- €
  • Circular lower leg: approx. 5.400,- €
  • Male breast (gynaecomastia): approx. 3.000,- €
  • Abdominal wall: approx. 3.800,- €
  • Upper arms: approx. 4.400,- €

In the case of a purely cosmetic procedure, these prices are supplemented by the Value added tax of currently 19% in addition. In the case of lipoedema, this is a medically indicated procedure and is exempt from VAT.

If you are considering other regions, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will clarify the options and the associated costs together.

Fat grafting and skin tightening

In addition to liposuction, we also offer the option of fat grafting (lipofilling), for example in the breasts, buttocks or to correct so-called “hip dips”. The costs for this amount to around €1,000 per region, plus the liposuction.

For optimum results, we often offer simultaneous skin tightening using argon plasma or laser. The costs for this are around €1,200.

Factors influencing the cost of liposuction

The cost of liposuction is influenced by various factors:

  • Treated region:
Larger areas are associated with higher costs.
  • Number of regions:
The more regions are treated, the higher the total costs.
  • Anaesthesia:
Procedures are performed under local anaesthetic as standard. If you prefer a general anaesthetic, additional costs will be incurred.
  • Skin tightening:
Additional procedures, such as a skin tightening, increase the costs.
  • Indication:                                                                    In the case of a cosmetically indicated procedure, VAT of currently 19% is added to the prices quoted. This is not applicable in the case of a medical indication such as lipoedema.

Liposuction costs: insurance and cost coverage

As I work exclusively as a private practitioner, statutory health insurance companies do not cover the costs of liposuction in my practice. If you are privately insured or entitled to benefits, you can clarify the cost coverage in advance. I will be happy to provide you with a cost estimate.

Why do liposuction costs vary?

Liposuction costs can vary greatly depending on which clinic or doctor is chosen and which region is to be treated. Aftercare and additional services can also influence the price. If it is a purely cosmetic procedure, VAT of currently 19% will also be added. The doctor's qualifications also play a role: experienced specialists often charge higher fees, but also offer more comprehensive expertise.

Transparency in liposuction costs and personalised advice

It is important to us that you are aware of the costs involved before you decide to have liposuction. We attach great importance to transparent pricing. In a personal consultation, we will discuss all open questions and draw up a customised treatment plan for you.

Frequently asked questions about the cost of liposuction:

The cost of liposuction depends on several factors, including the body region treated, the number of regions, the type of anaesthesia and any additional procedures such as skin tightening. The reason for the liposuction also influences the final price: for example, VAT of currently 19% is added if the procedure is purely cosmetic in nature. In the case of lipoedema, VAT is not applicable as the treatment is for a medical condition. Each treatment is individually tailored to the patient, which can lead to different costs.

In my private practice, statutory health insurance companies do not cover the costs of liposuction, regardless of whether it is a cosmetic procedure or the treatment of lipoedema. In any case, you will have to pay for it yourself. If you have private insurance or are entitled to benefits and suffer from lipoedema, you should clarify the possibilities of cost coverage with your insurance company in advance. In the case of a cosmetic procedure, the costs will not be covered here either.

The costs vary depending on the region being treated. For example, the price for liposuction on the thighs is around €4,800, while the cost for treatment of the male breast (gynaecomastia) is around €3,000. In the case of liposuction for cosmetic reasons, VAT of currently 19% is added to this price. This is not applicable for liposuction due to lipoedema. You will receive an exact cost breakdown during a consultation.

Yes, in addition to the pure treatment costs, additional costs may be incurred, e.g. for a general anaesthetic, skin tightening or aftercare. The initial consultation is also charged separately. All costs are discussed transparently in advance so that there are no surprises.

For patients with statutory health insurance, the costs of liposuction are currently only covered by statutory health insurance in stage III and only by corresponding panel doctors or in hospitals. The LipLeg study was recently completed and the results are currently (as of July 2025) still being analysed. Depending on the results of the evaluation, it is possible that the costs for liposuction in stage I or II will also be covered in the future. Privately insured patients can try to obtain liposuction at any stage of the disease at the expense of their private health insurance. Some private health insurance companies contribute to the costs. However, this should always be clarified in advance of an operation. Unfortunately, as a private doctor, statutory health insurance companies do not cover the costs of lipoedema treatment - either conservative or surgical - regardless of the stage of the disease.

In order to have the costs of liposuction for lipoedema covered by your health insurance, you will need a written diagnosis and a cost estimate from your surgeon. You then submit both to your health insurance company with a request for cost coverage. Your health insurance company will then tell you which other requirements you need to fulfil in order to have the costs covered. This is often a conservative therapy attempt lasting at least 6 months without success prior to an operation.

In Germany, it is generally required by law that an invoice for a medical treatment and therefore also for liposuction - even if it is only cosmetically indicated - must be prepared in accordance with the scale of fees for doctors (GOÄ). Important exceptions are treatments in the area of the contract doctor system (the EBM applies here) or the employers' liability insurance association (BG). A fee claim with flat rates is not legally permissible. With the GOÄ invoice, the amount of the final fee can still be influenced by the doctor by applying various factors. If a lot of fatty tissue has been removed by liposuction, a higher factor will certainly be applied than if only a small amount of fatty tissue is involved. This explains the different prices charged by the various clinics. In my practice, a legally compliant invoice is always prepared for each treatment in accordance with GOÄ, which you can then submit to your health insurance company for possible reimbursement if required.

Ultimately, you have the option of obtaining a loan to pay for liposuction via your bank or via a corresponding online portal for financing medical procedures. In individual cases, I myself offer payment by instalments in a few (e.g. 3-4) instalments.

The law in Germany stipulates that no medical treatment may be provided free of charge. This means that the initial consultation in our practice is also subject to a charge and unfortunately cannot be offset against further treatment. We charge a transparent fee for the initial consultation in accordance with GOÄ. This varies between approx. €40 for a consultation with a physical examination alone and €170 for an additional ultrasound examination of the legs and any necessary consultation for an operation.
